Her Serene Highness | Grace Kelly, 1956

Grace Kelly's departure from Hollywood, photographed by Allan Grant. Kelly became a famous actress in the 1950s, starring in such memorable films as Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, High Society, and The Country Girl, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She retired from acting at age 26.

Kelly became 'Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco' upon marrying Rainier III, Prince of Monaco in 1956. Princess Grace gave birth to the couple's first child, Princess Caroline nine months and four days after the wedding. 21 guns announced the event, a national holiday was called, gambling ceased, and free champagne flowed throughout the principality. A little over a year later, 101 guns announced the birth of their second child, Prince Albert.

Bogart & Bacall vs. HUAC | Washington DC, 1947

Actors Humphrey Bogart and wife number 4, Lauren Bacall and Richard Conte during a hearing charging H.U.A.C. with violating civil rights. In 1947, the committee held nine days of hearings into alleged communist propaganda and influence in the Hollywood motion picture industry. After conviction on contempt of Congress charges for refusal to answer some questions posed by committee members, the "Hollywood Ten" were blacklisted by the industry.

Eventually, more than 300 artists—including directors, radio commentators, actors and particularly screenwriters—were boycotted by the studios. Some, like Charlie Chaplin, left the U.S. to find work. Others wrote under pseudonyms or the names of colleagues. Only about ten percent succeeded in rebuilding careers within the entertainment industry.

In 1947, Bogart & Bacall also starred in Dark Passage, where Bogart plays a man convicted of murdering his wife who escapes from prison in order to prove his innocence. Bogart finds that his features are too well known, and is forced to seek illicit plastic surgery. The entire pre-knife part of the film is shot from a Bogart's-eye-view, with us seeing the fugitive for the first time as he starts to recuperate from the operation in the apartment of a sympathetic young artist (played by Bacall) for whom he soon finds affection. But what he's really after is revenge.

Out of Character | Irving Lazar in Gold-Rimmed Rounds

Agent Irving Lazar and Polly Bergen were among guests who "decorated" party for Earl Blackwell at Bistro in Los Angeles, CA, 1975.

Talent agent Irving "Swifty" Lazar was notorious for his oversized black opthalmic frames, but here we see another side of him in round gold-rimmed sunglasses. After putting together three major deals for Humphrey Bogart in a single day, he was dubbed "Swifty" by Bogart.

Earl Blackwell was a society impresario who made his fortune keeping track of celebrities and Miss Bergen appeared in many film roles, most notably in the original Cape Fear (1962) opposite Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.
