At the young age of 22, Hunter S. Thompson made his way south from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico with the intention writing once again for a sports publication. Although the magazine went under shortly after his appointment, his hedonistic adventures in Puerto Rico would become immortalized in one of his earlier novels "The Rum Diary".
Although Thompson began writing the novel in 1959, it wasn't published until 1998 thanks to it discovery by actor Johnny Depp. Depp came upon the manuscript while spending time with Thompson to improve his portrayal of the famous Gonzo Journalist for the film adaptation of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998).
