Happy Yé-Yé Veterans Day from Les Idoles

This psychedelic musical satire serves as both a critique and inadvertently a celebration of French pop music and yé-yé culture in the sixties, which seemed to fuel the revolutionary spirit in French youth while also offering up easy escapism.  Watch the American Flag Freakout Dance below:

Les Idoles apparently received a warm reception in France when it debuted in 1968, but for one reason or another the movie was never released in the United States.  More Les Idoles film stills and info at Cinebeats.

Into The Wild

Gold wire-rimmed P3 glasses at Mt. Shasta long ago, 1950.

It is not supposed to be easy, that is the whole point!

Hand-tinted glass lantern slides, circa 1937, of mountaineers in camp during the ascent of Mount Logan, Yukon (above), and mountaineers and serac at the end of a glacier in the Canadian Rockies (below).

At the base of the mountain, 1948.

Approaching Ben Lui in the Highlands of Scotland, Easter, 1965.

The "Brocken Spectre" meteorological optical phenomena at Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, 1968. The "spectre" appears when the sun shines from behind the observer, who is looking down from a ridge or peak into mist or fog.

...I had a dream which both frightened and encouraged me. It was night in some unknown place, and I was making slow and painful headway against a mighty wind. Dense fog was flying along everywhere. I had my hands cupped around a tiny light which threatened to go out at any moment... Suddenly I had the feeling that something was coming up behind me. I looked back, and saw a gigantic black figure following me... When I awoke I realized at once that the figure was a "specter of the Brocken," my own shadow on the swirling mists, brought into being by the little light I was carrying.

Croatian Lunch with Venetian Blinds

A cafe scene in Dubrovnik, 1968.

*Although Venetian blinds are most associated with the corporate office and cubicled work environments of the 20th century, these quiet curtains were first patented in 1760. It is believed that Venetian traders brought the idea from Persia to Venice, and freed Venetian slaves brought the blinds to France, introducing the technology to Western Europe.

Cantalope Eyes Come To Me Tonight | Judy in Disguise 1968

Judy in disguise, well that's what you are
Lemonade pie with a brand new car.
Cantalope eyes come to me tonight
Judy in disguise with glasses.

Keep a-wearing your bracelets and your new rara.
Cross your heart with your living bra.
Chimney sweep sparrow with guise.
Judy in disguise with glasses

Come to me tonight, come to me tonight,
Taking everything in sight,
Except for the strings on my kite.

Judy in disguise, well what you aiming for,
A circus of horrors, yeah, well that's what you are.
You made me a life of ashes
I guess I'll just take your glasses.
