After covering the 1954 McCarthy hearings early in her career, McGrory went on to follow many high stakes political campaigns, earning a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, the first woman to do so in 1975 for her Watergate scandal coverage. For a long time McGrory was the rare woman in a constant presence of male reporters.
