FEBRUARY 6, 1899, born as José Ramón Gil Samaniego in Durango, Mexico. Promoted as a "Latin lover" the world of cinema in 1917 eventually becoming a rival to Rudolph Valentino. Novarro played the title role in one of the biggest-grossing movies of the silent era, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925). and the first Mexican to succeed in Hollywood during silent and early talking films.
